What can you expect from therapy?

Practical details:

  • Duration: Individual sessions are usually 45-60 minutes long, family or couples sessions may be longer

  • Frequency: One session per week is most common, but depending on your needs and the type of therapy, the frequency of sessions could range from being 2-3 times per week to 1-2 times per month

  • Number: It depends on you and the complexity of your issues; 6-8 sessions over 2-3 months at minimum but you may want to continue for much longer if it supports your well-being and growth

  • Cost: Usually between INR 1000-5000/session, sometimes reflecting experience or type of training; some therapists have variable fees depending on the number or frequency of sessions, or your income level

A typical first session:

  • Usually takes place in an office with a discreet entrance and waiting area outside

  • The therapist will ask you why you’ve chosen to see them, understand your problems (how long has it been, how are you dealing with it so far, etc) and learn more about you (lifestyle, significant people, etc)

  • In the last 5-10 minutes, they will tell you more about themselves like their approach and what to expect (if they don’t, ask them to), discuss fees and frequency of sessions, and answer your questions

Following sessions:

  • Therapy is a gradual process of understanding yourself and what’s going on

  • It is a collaborative and interactive process, where the therapist listens, asks questions, and shares observations; rather than telling you what to do, they help guide your thought process and explore perspectives and solutions that work for you

  • It usually involves a series of small realizations rather than big breakthrough moments, and you just naturally end up applying the things you realize during therapy in your everyday life

  • The only effort you need is to make is to show up for your session, and let the rest be
